Puffed sleeves are such a trend right now and people are loving it. Do we really know where they come from and their impact on our body? Here I'll tell you a little bit why!
Puffed sleeves make their impact from basic tank tops to elaborated dresses. We've seen how almost every brand is adopting this trend to their collections; in fact, these garments that are altered on the sleeves seem to sell out pretty fast!

Let's dig into history as we always do it in this blog! Puffed sleeves were first time seen on the medieval times. By this time period these type of sleeves were very minimal; any exaggerated alteration could caught the church attention and see it as a symbol of impurity or even worse: Heresy.

Then we jump onto the 16th and 17th century. This time the puffed sleeves had an interesting meaning. The first people to develop new fashion trends by that time were the king and queen and thus, everybody would follow. Slashed sleeves was the name of this alteration because it looked as if someone would've slashed them. The king and queen wanted to look higher among others and this is why puffed sleeves were styled with other accessories in order to create an elevated an authoritative look.
I could talk pages about history but I don't want to bore you! Puffed sleeves started in history as a symbol of high class and because people loved the impact they had in their body; everybody wanted to look like the king and queen.
“I think the King is but a man, as I am. The violet smells to him as it doth to me. The element shows to him as it doth to me. All his senses have but human conditions. His ceremonies laid by, in his nakedness he appears but a man" William Shakespeare
The truth us that everybody dresses up to adorn their body! That's what is called style and everyone has their own. Everybody dresses up according to what they like and looks good with their body.
The effect of puffed sleeves on the body
Other than psychological reasons and the fact of feeling important and higher, puffed sleeves have a positive effect on how the body looks. The shoulders are one of the widest part of out body and because of that everything we put on top would affect how the rest of the body looks. Adding volume to the shoulders would make the waist look smaller and the hips wider.

Our torso is the part of our body that get the most attention and this is the reason why most women feel uncomfortable with their waist and try to accentuate it with belts and tight dresses.
When you wear puffed sleeves all the attention is caught from the shoulders and up; moreover your head and sight will be your most attracting attribute. This will make you feel more comfortable and confident about yourself. And the waist? We don't need it now, thank you!
